How To Feel Better After Surgery Faster With Nutrition
First, you might be asking yourself, what is an amino acid? To simply put it, amino acids are the building blocks of protein. They are organic compounds found in nature (aka natural foods) while some are also produced by the body. For reference, some foods that naturally store amino acids are:
Quinoa. (one of the most nutritious grains available today)
Eggs (also an excellent source of protein, containing all of the essential amino acids)
Turkey
Cottage cheese
Mushrooms
Fish
Legumes and Beans
While our body can produce amino acids and we can get the amino acids from many foods, it is difficult to produce/ingest the needed amount when preparing your body for invasive trauma that comes with surgery.
Now let’s talk about what they do for us and why they are so important. Amino acids are the building blocks of life and energy. When certain proteins are digested and broken down, amino acids are left behind to help fortify soft tissue, enhancing the musculoskeletal system, support the immune system, stimulate healthy skin, and more.
To bring us all back to the study published by The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, and conducted by the Department of Orthopedics & Rehabilitation at the University of Iowa, data supports the importance of supplementing your body with amino acids in preparation for surgery. The study was conducted on 400 adults who sustained pelvic and/or extremity fractures that were standard candidates for surgery. These candidates were broken up into two groups – group A (200) which was the control group, and group B (200) which was given oral amino acid supplements twice a day 2 weeks before surgery.
The results are compelling. Group B (supplemented group) had significantly lower overall complications than Group A ( control group) — almost 50% less likely to have complications after surgery. Providing further evidence that supplementing your body with amino acids has a protective effect against common complications and early skeletal muscle wasting after operative fixation of extremity and pelvic fractures. This study was hyper-focused on amino acids but further supports that malnutrition as a whole limits healing potential.
